چکیده

A warming climate influences boreal forest productivity, dynamics, and disturbance regimes. We used ecosystem models and 250 m satellite Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data averaged over the growing season (GSN) to model current, and estimate future, ecosystem performance. We modeled Expected Ecosystem Performance (EEP), or anticipated productivity, in undisturbed stands over the 2000–2008 period from a variety of abiotic data sources, using a rule-based piecewise regression tree. The EEP model was applied to a future climate ensemble A1B projection to quantify expected changes to mature boreal forest performance. Ecosystem Performance Anomalies (EPA), were identified as the residuals of the EEP and GSN relationship and represent performance departures from expected performance conditions. These performance data were used to monitor successional events following fire. Results suggested that maximum EPA occurs 30–40 years following fire, and deciduous stands generally have higher EPA than coniferous stands. Mean undisturbed EEP is projected to increase 5.6% by 2040 and 8.7% by 2070, suggesting an increased deciduous component OPEN ACCESS Remote Sens. 2014, 6 9146 in boreal forests. Our results contribute to the understanding of boreal forest successional dynamics and its response to climate change. This information enables informed decisions to prepare for, and adapt to, climate change in the Yukon River Basin forest.

Assessment of boreal forest historical C dynamics in the Yukon River Basin: relative roles of warming and fire regime change.

Carbon (C) dynamics of boreal forest ecosystems have substantial implications for efforts to mitigate the rise of atmospheric CO2 and may be substantially influenced by warming and changing wildfire regimes. In this study we applied a large-scale ecosystem model that included dynamics of organic soil horizons and soil organic matter characteristics of multiple pools to assess forest C stock cha...

Impact of rewilding, species introductions and climate change on the structure and function of the Yukon boreal forest ecosystem.

Community and ecosystem changes are happening in the pristine boreal forest ecosystem of the Yukon for 2 reasons. First, climate change is affecting the abiotic environment (temperature, rainfall and growing season) and driving changes in plant productivity and predator-prey interactions. Second, simultaneously change is occurring because of mammal species reintroductions and rewilding. The key...

Analyzing Climate Zooning and Climate Change Effects on Discharge of Jajrood River Basin

In this study, for climate zoning and determining the effects of climate change on discharge of Jajrood River Basin, data from 9 available stations in Jajrood River Basin were used. In order to create climatic zones in the Jajrood River Basin, multivariate cluster analysis was used. To validate the data, discriminant analysis was employed. For investigating the effects of temperature and precip...

Palaeodata-informed modelling of large carbon losses from recent burning of boreal forests

Wildfires play a key role in the boreal forest carbon cycle1,2, and models suggest that accelerated burning will increase boreal C emissions in the coming century3. However, these predictionsmaybe compromisedbecausebrief observational records provide limited constraints to model initial conditions4. We confronted this limitation by using palaeoenvironmental data to drive simulations of long-ter...
